Annette Maylam Counselling Wimbledon

BA (Hons) MBACP (Accred) Psychotherapist/Counsellor & Clinical Supervisor

Professional, Confidential Counselling in Wimbledon

About Me

I am an accredited psychotherapist/counsellor with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I believe that the quality of the therapeutic relationship, which I see as a collaborative one, plays a crucial factor in the healing process. Although my training has incorporated Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Trauma (EMDR) Therapy and Humanistic Psychotherapy, I have chosen to focus my way of working primarily on person-centred therapy, which is part of the humanistic approach, and accords most closely with my own philosophy. I also combine different therapeutic tools and approaches to fit the needs of the individual client.

Prior to my professional training as a Counsellor/Psychotherapist, I had a wealth of experience working in Public Relations for over fifteen years and this experience has been beneficial in my work with Employee Assistance Providers and Workplace Counselling, together with clients who may be struggling with stress related difficulties. I have worked in a number of clinical settings including: Wandsworth Bereavement Service, Cruse Bereavement Care, Wimbledon Guild Counselling Service, Primary Schools using Play Therapy to help children work through behavioural difficulties, and Wandsworth Prison working with addiction and bipolar clients.

I work with individuals and couples going through significant life changes e.g. relationship issues, job loss, career change, life-threatening illness, bereavement, mid-life crisis, which result in feelings of isolation, insecurity, desperation and depression. I also have experience of working with sexual abuse, trauma and violence. I have worked for many years with different social and cultural client groups.

Contract for Individual & Couples Psychotherapy/Counselling

    • Number of Sessions: This is always mutually agreed but I usually suggest with individual clients that we meet for 6 weekly sessions initially and then review our work to ensure you are getting what you need. The sessions are 50 minutes long. When working with couples I recommend that we meet fortnightly, initially for 6 sessions and then review our work to ensure you are getting what you need. The sessions are 60 minutes long.
    • Fees: £70 per fifty-minute session for individuals and £90 per one-hour session for couples. Payment is made on a session by session basis. Concessions are available for students or counsellors in training, and may also be available depending on other circumstances.
    • Cancellations: All appointments cancelled or missed are charged in full unless 48 hours’ notice is given for individual clients and 5 days notices is given for couples. If you are unable to attend an appointment I would appreciate being notified about this. If in exceptional circumstances I needed to cancel a session I would give you as much notice as possible.
    • Termination of therapy: This is normally related to goal completion and mutually agreed. Notice to termination is usually two weeks with individuals and one month with couples.
    • Method of Payment: I prefer to deal with appointments and fees at the end of the session and to be paid by cash, cheque or bank transfer.
    • Holidays: I will notify you of my holiday leave well in advance.
Contact outside of Therapy: If you need to contact me between sessions please telephone me if possible. Email is not always a reliable way of contacting me.
    • Late/early arrival: It is expected that the session will begin at the agreed time. Any sessions that begin after this time due to late arrival cannot be extended. If you arrive early I would appreciate you not knocking on the door more than 5 minutes before the appointment time.

    Confidentiality & Good Practice

An important aspect of any counselling relationship is confidentiality. For therapy to be beneficial it is important that you can speak openly about yourself and any difficult aspects of your life. Consequently, I believe that it is important that you understand the parameters of confidentiality before you start therapy.

In most circumstances, your confidentiality will be upheld. As I always say to my clients, “What is said in this room stays in this room.” However, there are exceptions where I may be required to break confidentiality and these exceptional circumstances are made explicit when we meet. It is an important ethical premise that unless you are in danger of hurting yourself or someone else, or I am compelled by a court of law, confidentiality will be maintained.

As a professional I subscribe to the codes of Ethics and Practice of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Supervision is an essential component of my counselling work and it is a place where I may discuss our work together with another professional. Supervision helps me to monitor and review the quality of my work and ensure that the highest ethical standards are maintained.

Primarily, the first session is used to explore the possibility of our working together. It is a chance for you to ask me any questions about how I work and what counselling entails. We can discuss what your expectations of counselling are and any anxieties you might have. We will also go over practicalities such as fees and timing of sessions.

We are all individual, so the number of sessions will vary from person to person. My commitment to my clients is to work effectively to minimize the number of sessions. However, our work together can carry on for as long as you desire it to. Usually we would meet once per week for a 50-minute session. We will agree a mutually convenient time for this meeting.

    Your First Appointment

    Individual therapy - £70 | EMDR Therapy -£80 | Couples Therapy - £90

Before making the first appointment I recommend that we have a brief telephone conversation to discuss what you need help with. Following this we will meet for an assessment appointment where I will gather further information about what you have been experiencing and relevant information about your life. Depending on the issues, we can agree how many sessions you might need. Skype sessions are also available but only after initial face-to-face meetings.

If you would like to arrange an appointment for an initial meeting please get in touch by calling or sending an email:

If I cannot answer your call it is safe to leave messages and if you wish me to call you back please leave your name, phone number and a convenient time. Similarly, I will always respond to emails as soon as I can.
